“Constructing an exhibition of portraits, each featuring a unique character embodying love, service, time and other facets of the essence of human life…”
– Wonderland. Magazine
In August 2022, The Mandrake launched a new chapter in the hotel’s Artist in Residence series with illustrious photographer Haris Nukem.
Taking over The Mandrake Masha Hari Theatre and Jurema Terrace, hotel guests witnessed Nukem live at work, as he produced a brand new body of printed portrait photographs that each depict a unique character embodying love, service, time and further significant pillars. The bespoke artworks were peppered throughout the property for visitors to reflect and purchase.
Haris Nukem has become one of the UK’s most lauded contemporary artists, having partnered with household names including Selfridges, Universal Music and Warner Group. The Bosnia-born visionary’s work is a passionate study of the human spirit in the 21st century. Championing vivid scenes, the London based photographer portrays allegories and fictional scenarios set in the modern world. Building visual narratives around human nature, Nukem’s provocative images celebrate the beauty and messiness of being a person, amplified by an opulence in colour and incandescent hues. Fusing lavish aesthetics with a conscious sensibility, his work blends classical influences with contemporary social reflections.

‘Often we can feel quite incubated inside of the civilisations we live in, and I don’t think we ever consider how fragile they are. What photographers do is help us understand how lucky we are.’
